*14kt Gold-Filled Jewelry has 100 times the amount of gold as "gold-plate" and is considered lifetime jewellery. Popular in the 1930s and 40s, and enjoying a resurgence in recent years, gold-filled is made by using heat and pressure to apply a layer of karat gold to a base of less expensive metal. This produces a surface with karat gold, in this instance, 14kt gold. The minimum layer of karat gold must be equal to at least 1/20 (one twentieth, which is equal to 5%) of the total weight of the item.

**22kt Gold Vermeil, a technique using only precious metals, where 22kt Gold covers a Sterling Silver core, usually with a thickness of between 3 and 5 microns.
